ChristinaCALDWELL, Idaho (Aug. 19, 2023)—A barrel racer from Lampasas, Texas earned more money than any other contestant at the Caldwell Night Rodeo, and it was her second championship here. She also won in 2006.
Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi won the first round, was second in the second and the final round and earned the title in the D & B Arena with a time of 50.50 seconds on three runs. When her paychecks were added up, she left here with $10,068 riding Jets Top Gun that she calls “Benny.” She is leading the world standings and is on pace to win a third world championship.
If she does that, it will be her first since 2009. She also won a gold buckle in 2007 and will compete at her 17th Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in December where world titles are determined.
Stan Branco from Chochilla, California left here with the steer wrestling buckle. He had a total time of 13.2 seconds to win $9,457. That money will help him secure his second trip to Las Vegas for the NFR. He was there 10 years ago, and is currently inside the top 15 in the world standings that qualify at 12th. The money he earned here should move him up a spot and give him a little more breathing room.
Taylor Broussard was probably the happiest cowboy here on Saturday. He finished second in the finals but had the highest overall score of 174 points on two horses. He was the first contestant to take the victory lap in front of the “Rowdies and Civies.” Broussard is just outside of the top 15 and has ground to make up to qualify for his second NFR.
History might have been made with a husband and wife winning titles on Saturday. Shelby Boisjoli won the breakaway roping with a total time of 8.7 seconds and then got to watch her husband Haven Meged in the tie-down roping. Meged also earned the championship with a total time of 25.8 seconds.
The team roping title went to Tayler Wade from Terrell, Texas, and Wesley Thorp from Throckmorton, Texas. They had a total time of 15.7 seconds on three runs. Ryder Wright of Beaver, Utah, rode two saddle bronc horses for 176.5 points for the win.
The bull riding featured one round of competition and Dustin Donovan Bouquet from Bourg, La., held on to the top spot with 88.5 points. The all-around winner was Brush Minton from Witter Springs, Calif., who earned $&,603 in tie-down roping and steer wrestling.
Plans are underway for the 100th edition of the Caldwell Night Rodeo which will be August 13-17, 2024.
