MAUNEY HAS FANS ON FEET AT CALDWELL NIGHT RODEO

CALDWELL, Idaho (Aug. 16, 2023) — Bull power has been the name of the game for bull riders at the Caldwell Night Rodeo since Powder River Rodeo started providing them over a decade ago.

That is again the case at the 99th edition of the rodeo. Through the first two performances, the bulls have dominated with only one successful ride each night. The athleticism and power of the animal athletes can not be denied and has had fans at the edge of their seats. It happened again on Wednesday night as one rider after another hit the dirt early. The final rider of the night was the legendary J.B. Mauney who is competing with a broken leg.

A year ago, Mauney, who now lives in Stephenville, Texas, was hurt and unable to compete here. Fans have been waiting to see him in action and he did not disappoint. Mauney was the last competitor of the night and rode Powder River Rodeo’s Cherry Bomb for 84.5 points.

That put him ahead of JaCauy Hale from Ganado, Arizona, who scored 80.5 points during the first performance of the rodeo. The bull riding here is one full round and whether Mauney’s lead will hold on for the championship remains to be seen.

Caldwell’s fans look forward to seeing the best competitors of the night make victory laps around the arena. After Mauney’s ride, he limped back to the front of the bucking chutes and waved to the crowd instead of getting on the back of a saddle horse to get up close and personal with the “rowdies and civies.”

Making his first victory lap in his career was Jacob Raine from Mount Pleasant, Tennessee. Raine, who joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in 2020 rodeo Burch Rodeo’s Party Clown for 88 points and will likely be back at Caldwell for Saturday Night’s Championship Finals.

With performances Thursday and Friday determining who competes in all of the events accept bull riding on Saturday, contestants are keeping a close watch on what is happening in the D & B Arena.

Raine is certainly one of those.

His 88 from Wednesday may not hold onto the first-place spot until Saturday, but it is highly likely to keep him among the top 12 bareback riders that qualify to ride for the title here.

Texans Tyler Wade and Wesley Thorp moved to the top of the leaderboard in the team roping thanks to their 6.1 second run on Wednesday. With Wade, from Terrell doing the heading and Thorp from Throckmorton heeling, they won the first round here already. Their time of 4.0 seconds garnered them $3,044 each. Their total of 10.1 seconds moved them into first place ahead of current world champions Kaleb Driggers and Junior Nogueira.

The third performance features Power of Pink at D & B Arena. It starts at 8 p.m. where money will be raised to provide mammograms for women in the Treasure Valley.
