WELL “FINE” THEN

Published

on

Since there seems to be light brought to the amount of penalty Fines for breaking rules being imposed on the contestants at this year’s NFR here’s some history for you. This is a page taken from an audit conducted on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) in 2011 by a Colorado based accounting firm for the years ending in 2010 and 2011.

2010-2011 AUDIT OF PROFESSIONAL RODEO COWBOYS ASSOCIATION, INC AND AFFILIATES

As you can see in 2010 total revenue to the PRCA in fining the contestants and members was $2,776,335. In 2011 total revenue in fining the contestants and members was $2,726,066.  Fines are a result of rule infractions that a contestant or member of the association breaks. Fast forward 11 years and the possibility of these fine revenues being quadrupled in total amounts is very likely.

PLEASE NOTE * On the form it states FINES & FEES aka FINES & LATE FEES

“Imagine how much “FINE” revenues are currently in 2022″

Here are a few fine sheets for the 2022 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo:

Fines for Round 4
Fines for Round 5
Fines for Round 6

The question remains as to why there isn’t more transparency every year as to where the revenue comes from going into a non-profit organization who does not pay income tax on their revenue yet makes a bundle of money from fining the contestants that do pay income taxes.

We all agree that rules are rules and when broken a penalty must be assessed. But transparency across the board is also important.

Given that a contestant buys a membership into the organization to be able to compete in PRCA Sanctioned rodeos and are only paid if they place high enough in the round but then fined for a rule infraction which they must then contest the fine or pay the fee this huge stream of revenue should be forth coming by the Association every year.

Every contestant and member have a right to know what their money goes towards be it entry fees, dues or fine fees. Where does that fine money go? Does it go back to the committees who put on the rodeo or does it stay in the coffers of the PRCA? And if it stays with the PRCA, why? How is it used? Is it used for more clinics to help the with the judging program? To help committees advertise their rodeos? Help bring in new rodeo’s to increase prize money for contestants? No one really seems to know.  Just ends up in the bottom line on the public tax record as a grand total of profit or loss.

Is it time for the Cowboys to take a stand and demand transparency? Or will they get fined for that too? You be the judge…
