ChristinaCALDWELL, Idaho (Aug. 19, 2022)— The real stars of the Caldwell Night Rodeo on Friday were the fans who filled the stands to capacity and cheered for every contestant, the animal athletes, fans and especially veterans.
Friday was the final opportunity for most contestants to make a bid for a spot in Saturdays Championship Night competition and that pressure was seen throughout the competition. In the bareback riding, it was R.C. Landingham that had the most success. He scored 82.5 point on Legends Rodeo’s horse named Illegal Smile.
There was nothing illegal about the smile on Landingham’s face as he took a victory lap around the arena. The score was good enough to get the Hat Creek, California, resident a fourth-place check and give him an opportunity to ride here again on Saturday night.
Breakaway roping has become a very popular event for women at rodeos across the country. Caldwell is no exception. On Friday night, fans got to see the first-round winner compete, stop the clock in 2.6 seconds and win the second round as well. That young woman has won over $3,200 here and is none other than the daughter of an eight-time world champion.
Hali Williams from Comanche, Texas, is the favorite to win the title here on Saturday. But there are five women coming behind her that will be working hard to close the gap. Williams, who had planned to become a nurse decided she wanted to hit the rodeo trail and rope instead. Her family knows what it takes to go down the road, enter and compete across the country so they have mentored and encouraged her.
She has a total time of 5.1 seconds, just two tenths faster than Josie Conner from Iowa, Louisiana that roped here earlier in the week. Williams is outside the top 15 but could narrow the gap with a win here tomorrow.
Championship Night at the D & B Arena is sold out. The rodeo will be broadcast on The Cowboy Channel.
