Statler Wright is hoping to be the next member of his famous saddle bronc riding family to win a title at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR). After having the high score in round one of Bracket 5, he rode again on Saturday morning and scored 87 points on Calgary Stampede’s Zorta Proud. He will return to Dickies Arena for the Semi-Finals of the FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament. FWSSR photo by James Phifer.
FORT WORTH, Texas, (Feb. 1, 2025) — For rodeo contestants competing at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR) ProRodeo Tournament, dominating a Bracket is a step towards a championship in Dickies Arena.
Saddle bronc rider Statler Wright did just that for the second consecutive year. One year ago, he made two 88.5-point rides, advanced to the Semi-Finals and then to the Finals. Wright, who lives in Beaver, Utah, tied for fourth place with his older brother Ryder Wright in 2024. The youngest of the second-generation of Wright brothers earned nearly $9,000 which helped him qualify for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
This year, he is back with his eye on the prize. He scored 84.5 points Friday night then came back Saturday morning and scored 87 points on Calgary Stampede’s horse, Zorta Proud. Statler Wright has already won $4,443 and has an opportunity to add to that substantially. If he wins the title here, he would join his father Cody Wright, brother Stetson Wright and uncle Jake Wright as saddle bronc riding champions at the FWSSR.
Four-time world champion Zeke Thurston from Big Valley, Alberta, has something to say about that. Thurston had the highest marked saddle bronc score on Saturday night at 89 points. He rode Pickett Pro Rodeo’s Bill Fick Top Egyptian for the win and will be back Sunday afternoon for his second ride in Bracket 6. Thurston is one of the most successful saddle bronc riders going down the road today, but he has yet to win a title in Dickies Arena.
Another Canadian is working her way to the top in the breakaway roping. Jenna Dallyn has primarily competed at rodeos close to her home in Nanton, Alberta. Her success in her home country helped her qualify for and win the NFR Open in Colorado Springs last July. That win helped her get here, where she stopped the clock in 1.8 seconds on Saturday night – the fastest time so far at this year’s rodeo.
Dallyn and all the Bracket 6 competitors have their second round on Sunday, Feb. 1 starting at 2 p.m. Monday and Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. will feature Bracket 7, the final bracket of the tournament.
