FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 25, 2025) The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo’s $1.5 million FWSSR Pro Rodeo Tournament finished the first of seven brackets of competition Saturday at Dickies Arena.

Saddle bronc rider Kade Bruno of Challis, Idaho, won first place in both rounds to advance to the semi-finals on the final weekend of the stock show. Bruno marked 87.5 points in both rounds, winning round two on Brookman Rodeo’s Apollo, and earning nearly $5,000 in the quarterfinals rounds.

Tie-down roper Shad Mayfield of Clovis, New Mexico, won first in round one and tied for first in round two to punch his semi-finals ticket. After he tied the arena record on Friday night, Mayfield returned on Saturday with a time of 8.6 seconds to tie with fellow National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualifier Kincaide Henry for first place in round two. Mayfield is the reigning world champion all-around cowboy, a former tie-down roping world champion and the reigning FWSSR champion.

The biggest money winner in bracket one was bull rider Maverick Potter who lives nearby in Waxahachie. Potter was the only bull rider who made a qualified ride in both rounds. He won round one with 78 points on Sutton Rodeo’s Dr. Strange. He then rode another Sutton bull – Heatin’ Up – for 83.5 points to finish second in round two behind Idaho cowboy Roscoe Jarboe who scored 84.5 on Sutton’s bull CrystalX. Potter earned $7,000 while qualifying for the semi-finals.

Hope Thompson of Abilene was the top breakaway roper in bracket one. She placed second in round one, then won round two with a time of 2.6 seconds. She and National Cowgirl Hall of Fame honoree Lari Dee Guy, who also lives in Abilene, move on to the semifinals.

Former world champion team roping header Clay Smith and his partner Coleby Payne won round two of team roping with a 4.1-second run. The pair are the reigning FWSSR tournament champions and advance to the wild card round.

Barrel racer Toria Madsen of Blackfoot, Idaho, was a last-minute replacement in Bracket 1. She was the final runner Saturday night but managed to win the round with a time of 17.46. She will have to wait to see if she gets another chance to compete at Dickies Arena since she and LaTricia Duke of Zephyr, Texas, who won round one, tied in money won in their bracket. Duke moved on to the wild card round while Madsen went into the last-chance, non-qualifier pool where she will see how her winnings stack up with those who finish lower than third in the other brackets. Only the top money winner in that category will advance to the wild card round.

Bracket 2 features a whole new slate of competitors. They will compete Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. and Monday night at 7:30 p.m. at Dickies Arena.
