FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 24, 2025) Shad Mayfield, the newly crowned World Champion All-Around Cowboy and Tie-Down Roper, picked up where he left off at last year’s Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR) at the opening round of the $1.5 million FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament on Friday.

Mayfield, a native of Clovis, New Mexico, who now lives in Lipan, Texas, is the reigning FWSSR champion in tie-down roping and he won the first round of bracket 1 in record fashion. His time of 7.2 seconds matched those of Bryson Sechrist in 2022 and Matt Shiozawa in 2020 to hold the FWSSR record.

This was the beginning of the 16-day tournament which began after the stock show hosted a full week of specialty rodeo events. The tournament format features all eight professional rodeo contests. In each event 56 competitors (56 teams in team roping) are divided into seven brackets of eight.

Contestants in each bracket compete in two rounds of back-to-back action with the top two money earners in each event advancing to the semi-finals and the top four from each semi-final move on to Championship Saturday, February 8 when the 2025 champions are crowned.

The third highest money winner in each bracket advances to the wild card round along with the highest remaining money earner in each event after all brackets are completed. The top two in the wild card round advance to the semifinals.

In addition to the top-ranked rodeo athletes from the 2024 and early 2025 season, winners from five nearby 2024 Texas rodeos – Cleburne, Denton, Waxahachie, Mineral Wells and Wichita Falls – are invited to compete in the tournament.

Sam Goings of Fallon, Nevada, qualified for Fort Worth’s ProRodeo Tournament by winning the Ellis County Fair & Rodeo in Waxahachie, Texas, and wrestled this steer in 3.8 seconds to split first with former world champion Ty Erickson in round one of Bracket 1. FWSSR photo by James Phifer

The winners from the Ellis County Fair & Rodeo in Waxahachie competed in Bracket 1 and they held their own among their nationally ranked competitors in round one. Glenn Jackson of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, representing the Ellis County Fair & Rodeo finished second to Mayfield in the tie-down roping while Sam Goings of Fallon, Nevada, also representing Waxahachie, split first place in steer wrestling with former world champion Ty Erickson of Helena, Montana. Both men stopped the clock in 3.8 seconds.

Two other cowboys representing the Waxahachie event finished in the money in their respective events. Bareback rider Chad Rutherford of Hillsboro, Texas was third with 83.5 points on Rafter G Rodeo’s R. Watson’s War Rock while National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualifier and Resistol Rookie of the Year Weston Timberman took first with 84.5 on Brookman Rodeo’s SOS.

Saddle bronc rider Cauy Masters of Leon, Iowa, scored 85 points on Brookman’s Satisfaction for third while two-time NFR cowboy Kade Bruno of Challis, Idaho, won the event with 87.5 points on Brookman’s Ragin’ Lunatic.

Although he qualified on his national ranking, Waxahachie bull rider Maverick Potter hauled in the night’s biggest paycheck when he scored 78 points on Sutton Rodeos’ Dr. Strange and took home $3,750 as the best of just two qualified rides.

Bracket 1 concludes Saturday night at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo Action starts at 7:30 p.m. at Dickies Arena.
