FORT WORTH, Texas (January 20, 2025)—The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day with the Cowboys of Color Invitational Rodeo, presented by Telemundo 39 on Monday, January 20. This was the 15th year for the multi-cultural event features some of the top Black, native American and Hispanic cowboys and cowgirls competing for $25,000 in a single day.

Three-time National Finals Rodeo (NFR) tie-down roper John Douch of Huntsville, Texas, was the first cowboy to compete in his event and clocked a time of 9.6 seconds, which held through the event. Douch’s tie withstood a strong bid from fellow Huntsville cowboy Deweldon Watson who stopped the clock in 9.3 seconds, but failed to give the calf the required head start and incurred a ten-second penalty. Douch has won this event multiple times.

A mother-daughter duo dominated the barrel racing action. Kortnee Solomon, a 15-year-old cowgirl from Hempstead, Texas, made the fastest trip through the cloverleaf pattern. Her time of 17.28 seconds was thirteen one-hundredths of a second faster than her mother, Kanesha Jackson, who placed second with 17.41. Kortnee’s dad is NFR veteran roper Cory Solomon.

Avontis Williams of Kaufman, Texas, was the first bull rider to make a qualified ride with a score of 81 points. Jesus Villa of Weatherford was the next and he moved to the lead with an 84. After the next two riders hit the dirt, Jack Mitchell of Kaufman rode Rafter G Rodeo Company’s bull #232 for 88 points to win the event.

Chase Pierre of Brookshire, Texas, won the steer wrestling with a time of 4.8 seconds. Pat Hooper of Athens rode the same horse as Pierre and finished fourth.

The bucking horses dominated the ranch bronc riding with no cowboy making a qualified ride.

Junior bull riders fared better with six of the eight riders earning scores. First place went to Corbin Bull of Lipan with 76 points, followed closely by Ringo Stermer of Valley View with 74.

The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo continues at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday with the first performance of the PBR’s Last Cowboy Standing featuring 40 top pro bull riders in an elimination format which concludes Wednesday night.
