FORT WORTH, Texas, (Feb. 3, 2024) — The 127th Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo ended on Saturday night with champions crowned at the FWSSR Pro Rodeo Tournament in Dickies Arena.
It’s taken seven brackets, a wild card round, two semi-finals and the championship round to see who would rise to the top. After 18 rodeo performances, the $1.2 million rodeo closed with a bang.
Some of those wins came with challenges, but the challenge just made it more meaningful for bareback rider Rocker Steiner from nearby Weatherford. Steiner was the final rider of the night and knew that he had to score over 91.5 points to earn his second consecutive title here.
He also was confident that he had the horse to do that on in Calgary Stampede’s Blasting Sand. Early in the ride, there was an equipment failure early in the ride, so he got to get on another horse. Steiner grabbed his bareback rigging, ran back to the bucking chutes and got ready to do it all again.
The second horse he climbed on was J Bar J’s Straight Stick and after a successful effort the judges scored him 92.5. Steiner earned more money than any other competitor here at $28,000 and is the only repeat champion from last year.
Danielle Lowman from Gilbert, Arizona, and her great mare, She’Biz, set an arena record earlier this week at 1.6 seconds, then topped their rodeo with a win on Saturday night. Lowman is proud to represent the Navajo Nation on the rodeo trail and now they can be proud that she won her first Fort Worth championship. She stopped the clock in 1.8 for the title and won a total of $24,750.
There was a tie in steer wrestling when Tanner Brunner, from Ramona, Kansas, and Dalton Massey from Hermiston, Oregon, each stopped the clock in 3.7 seconds. Massey earned $500 more because of success in early rounds for a total of $21,500. Brunner had $21,000 and $16,000 of their earnings came from their sub-four second runs on Saturday.
Coleby Pane, from Stephenville, Texas, was 17th in the world standings last year and had to watch his team roping partner compete at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) without him. He and Clay Smith, from Broken Bow, Oklahoma, stopped the clock in 4.5 seconds to win the Fort Worth championship. They each added $25,000 to each their earnings in 2024.
Tie-down roper Shad Mayfield got his 2024 rodeo season off to a great start with a win here. Mayfield, from Clovis, New Mexico, stopped the clock in 7.8 seconds to earn $26,000.
In the women’s barrel racing Sarah Winkelman from Big Lake, Minnesota, earned the win. After posting the fastest time of the whole rodeo during Semi-Finals B at 16.26 seconds, she came back as the first runner in the finals and stopped the clock in 16.40. She never left the top spot and added $27,000 to her earnings.
Bull rider Cody Teel has had a lot of success in his career including a world championship in 2012. He has won rodeos and bull ridings across the United States but never gotten a win at the legendary Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo – until this year.
Teel, from Bryan, Texas, scored 87 points on Rafter G Rodeo’s bull named Goin Brandon for the championship. He added $25,000 to his checking account.
Saddle bronc rider Damian Brennan qualified for his first NFR in December and is well on his way to returning later this year after earning the title here. Brennan, who tied for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association title last June for Western Texas College in Snyder, is originally from Injune, Queensland, Australia.
His success here on Saturday came aboard Andrews Rodeo’s horse All or Nothing. Brennan scored 91.5 points for the win and earned $26,500.
The 2025 edition of the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo will begin January 17th and end on February 8th.
