NASHVILLE, TN. – (February 7, 2025) –Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) has announced the establishment of the Eugene Ward Memorial Scholarship, honoring the life and legacy of distinguished alumnus Gene Ward. The scholarship, which will be awarded annually, initiated by a generous gift from his wife, Grammy Award-winning artist and Grand Ole Opry Legend Jeannie Seely Ward, will support LMU students who are working their way through school, carrying forward Ward’s legacy of service, leadership, and academic excellence.
A 1956 graduate of LMU’s Business Administration program, Ward built an extraordinary career in law and public service. He served as Vice President and General Counsel at Nashville Electric Service and as General Counsel at the Tennessee Public Service Commission, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to justice and public welfare. Throughout his life, Ward’s dedication to his community and alma mater was evident in his numerous philanthropic efforts and professional achievements, including his 2005 induction into LMU’s Professional Hall of Fame and his 2021 induction into the Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association Hall of Fame.
“Eugene ‘Mose’ Ward worked his way through LMU milking cows early in the morning then working in the cafeteria, and he told everyone he met that he did!” Seely said. “He was not ashamed of his circumstances but took great pride in accomplishing his goal. He has mentored others by his example of desire, determination, and hard work, and he was often quoted saying, ‘If I could do it, you can too.’ We believe you can too.”
Ward’s passing was met with an outpouring of admiration and respect, with high-profile community leaders as well as many fellow associates from NES gathering to celebrate his life. Many country music legends and community leaders were in attendance. Performances in Gene’s honor included Mark Wills, Vince Gill, Larry Gatlin and Cutter and Cash & The Kentucky Grass, accompanied by Rhonda Vincent. Speakers Congressman Bob Clement and Larry Chun both spoke, offering inspiration and humor.
The Gene Ward Memorial Scholarship will provide financial assistance to deserving students at LMU, prioritizing those who are working their way through school. Donations to the scholarship fund can be made online at www.LMUnet.edu/GeneWard or mailed to:
