Palestine, Texas October 28, 2024 – While most events are planned a year or more in advance, a husband-and-wife team took on the challenge just seven months ago to revive a stagnant event, transforming it into something far more than just another rodeo.
“Build it, and they will come.”
The Rush Herrington Pro Rodeo has deep roots in the community, but when Larry and Lauri Turner—son-in-law and daughter of the late Rush Herrington—stepped up in March, they had a vision to create something greater in honor of a beloved local cowboy. Despite working with limited funds and a small team of volunteers, they stayed focused on their dream. Without hesitation, they began upgrading the rodeo grounds in Palestine, Texas, adding VIP seating, fan-friendly amenities, sponsorships, and local promotional events. Each night also featured free concerts in a VIP area, enhancing the event beyond traditional rodeo offerings.
Their hard work paid off. Friday night drew near-record crowds, even with high school football and a local homecoming competing for attention. By Saturday, the grandstands were packed, with standing-room-only space for latecomers, as the community rallied around the event.
“Recreating the Rush Herrington Memorial Rodeo for my father is more than reviving an event—it’s a tribute to his legacy, a testament to the love, resilience, and dedication he instilled in me. Each moment of this rodeo is a reminder of him, and carrying on his spirit through this tradition means keeping his heart alive in the dust and grit of every ride.” — Lauri Herrington Turner
The 2024 Rush Herrington Memorial Rodeo is just the first step toward what promises to become one of the premier western events in the state.
Long live small-town rodeos.
