CALDWELL, Idaho (Aug 14, 2024) – Saddle bronc rider Chase Brooks arrived at the Caldwell Night Rodeo on Wednesday night anticipating his matchup.

He was well acquainted with Calgary Stampede’s horse Y.U.R Friskey. The random draw that matches cowboys with bucking horses had their names together last March at Rodeo Houston and before that during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in December in Las Vegas.

He was 83.5 points in Las Vegas, then 81 in Houston. But he hadn’t been on the horse in an outdoor arena and was hoping for the best. That happened and when the judges added up their scores, Brooks, from Deer Lodge, Mont., had an 87 by his name. He is now at the top of the leaderboard and will have to see what happens during the next two performances to see if he has a chance to ride for the championship at the D & B Arena on Saturday night.

“That horse was great tonight,”

“That horse was great tonight,” Brooks said. “I think the animals can feel the energy of the crowd here and I think that helped both of us.”

An injury saw Brooks setting out last January and February and he has had some ground to make up. The six-time NFR qualifier is currently 21st in the world standings. He needs to move up into the top 15 to be back in Las Vegas this December to compete at rodeo’s championships a seventh time.

Looking for his first NFR qualification is the 18-year-old reigning college champion bull rider Wacey Schalla from Arapaho, Oklahoma. Schalla is currently eighth in the world standings and may have helped his cause quite a bit here. He rode Powder River Rodeo’s bull branded 38J for 89 points to move to the top of the leaderboard in the bull riding. The bull riding is one full round of competition that will be complete on Saturday night. His position may change, but with just four men having been successful so far, he is very likely to earn a big check.

He also has an opportunity in the bareback riding. Last June, he competed in these two events at the College National Finals Rodeo. He got on Calgary Stampede’s Xceptional Margareta in the bareback riding and scored 84 points. That is currently in fifth and could secure him a spot in the Championship Finals here on Saturday night.

The third performance of the Caldwell Night Rodeo will begin in D & B Arena on Wednesday night at 8 p.m., where funds will be raised for cancer screenings through the CNR Strong campaign.
