CALDWELL, Idaho (Aug 17, 2024) – The final performance of the Caldwell Night Rodeo was a night of firsts for all of the champions.

And with six weeks left in the regular season, every dollar earned is critical from those hoping to compete at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in Las Vegas in December. For saddle bronc rider Kade Bruno, who grew up in Challis, the money increases his lead in the world standings.

Bruno tied for second in the first round of competition, then came back to the D & B Arena on Saturday night and had the sold-out crowd on the edge of their seats. he rode Powder River Rodeo’s Miss Valley for 90.5 points to take command of the overall title and win the final round too.

All the rodeo announcers had to say was Idaho to have the Rowdies and Civies cheering. Then when they announced Bruno’s score and he took the victory lap around the arena horseback, the cheering and applause could be heard clear across town. Bruno had a total score of 176.5 points and won nearly $8,000. Bruno will be representing Idaho at rodeo’s championships for the third time and is hoping that next year when he is announced at rodeo’s it is with world champion after his name.

Michelle Alley has never qualified for the NFR, and she was well outside the top 15 at 45th when she entered here. Alley from Madisonville, Texas, was the high-money earner at this year’s rodeo. She had three runs that added up to 51.13 seconds. She had the fastest time of the entire rodeo on Saturday night stopping the clock in 16.83 seconds. The $10,389 that she earned here will put her in a better position to finish the year strong.

In bareback riding, Jess Pope, the 2021 world champion had total of 174 points for the win. Pope is also outside the top 15 but moved up with all of his success this week. He is currently in 19th place and added $5,851 to his checking account from Caldwell.

The all-around champion here is 18-year-old Wacey Schalla who won the bull riding and earned money in the bareback riding too. Schalla earned those same titles at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming, last June. He is currently sixth in the world standings in bull riding and will likely be competing in that event in Las Vegas in December.

Plans are underway for the 101st Caldwell Night Rodeo which will be held August 12 – 16, 2025. The arena will get a revamp as sky boxes are added at the top of the stands and a new stand will be built over the bucking chutes.
