CALDWELL, Idaho (Aug 13, 2024) – A century ago, the citizens of Caldwell, Idaho, got together and hosted a rodeo that now has 100 years of history – and if opening night was any indication, this rodeo has a great future ahead of it.
It is the rodeo “Where the Cowboys Are the Stars,” and the star power saw newcomers and seasoned veterans having success in the D&B Arena. When the chute gate opened and Outlaw Buckers’ bareback horse exploded, it was all Trevar McCallister could do to hang on for eight seconds. The 27-year-old from Ronan, Montana, matched the horse move for move and it paid off with an 86-point ride. That probably will not remain in first place for the next three nights, but it does have a chance to see him back for Saturday night’s championships.
Steer wrestler Tanner Brunner from Ramona, Kansas, stopped the clock in 3.8 seconds on Tuesday to take the lead in the second round. While he didn’t have any luck in the first round, Brunner’s time in front of the crowd is the fastest of the rodeo so far and should earn him a good check. He is currently ninth in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings and is likely headed to compete at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in Las Vegas in December.
The reigning world champion is at the top of the leaderboard in breakaway roping. Shelby Boisjoli – Meged stopped the clock in 2.5 seconds, to take the overall lead with a total of 5.3 seconds on two runs. Meged also leads the second round, but that is likely to change. She was crowned the champion here a year ago and is on track to defend her title.
There were two successful bull riders and both of them will be waiting through the rest of the rodeo to see where they place. The bull riding has one full round of competition that continues through Saturday. Jace Trosclair, from Chauvin, Louisiana, has been working hard to qualify for his first NFR. He helped his quest with an 87-point effort on Powder River Rodeo’s Alakazoo.
Trosclair is ninth in the world standings and even if he doesn’t hang on to first place, he should get a good check for that effort. Hayes Weight, who is second in the world standings was also successful scoring 82. This rodeo is very important to Weight who lives in Goshen, Utah, as it counts for points in the Wilderness Circuit which includes rodeos in Idaho and Utah.
The second performance of the Caldwell Night Rodeo will begin in D & B Arena on Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
Bull Riding: 1, Jace Trosclair, Chauvin, La., 87 points on Powder River Rodeo’s Alakazoo. 2, Hayes Thayne Weight, Goshen, Utah, 82.
