CHEYENNE, Wyo., July 22, 2024 — The 128th Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo could be life-changing for Kansas cowgirl Chelsea Moore.
Riding her five-year-old gelding, The Kandyman, that she calls Jackson, Moore stopped the clock in 17.07 seconds to win Quarterfinals 4 of the rodeo and advance to the Semi Finals. Prior to Cheyenne’s rodeo, the mom of two was ranked 40th in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association world standings.

She has two great horses to ride in making a bid for her first qualification to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. She had success in Denver in January and then won the Tucson, Arizona, rodeo aboard another sorrel gelding Tres Socks that she calls Woodrow. The Tucson Rodeo features a big arena and a similar barrel racing pattern. Moore who won that rodeo with a final run that was identical to her run here at 17.07.
She planned her rodeo schedule very carefully in the spring. When summer came, she packed up the family and hit the road. Today’s win added about $2,500 to her earnings and secured a spot in the Semi Finals where she could add to even more and run for the championship.
Tuesday’s Quarter Finals round featured a lot of newcomers having success. In the tie-down roping it was 20-year-old Dylan Hancock that had the fastest time. The San Angelo, Texas, resident stopped the clock in 11.1 seconds for the win.

Sarah Angelone, the 2022 WPRA All-Around champion from Lipan, Texas, clocked the fastest time of the Quarterfinals thus far to win the round. Her time of 3.8 seconds added nearly $3,000 to season earnings. She was ranked 19th before the rodeo began and needs to move into the top 15 by the end of the season to make a return trip to the National Finals Breakaway Roping.
Brothers Gavin and Wyatt Hershberger from Congress, Arizona, won the team roping with an 8.8-second run. In the steer wrestling Wyatt Lindsay from Las Cruces, New Mexico had the quickest time at 7.5 seconds. Lindsay has been a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association for 10 years and if he continues his success here, he will notch the biggest win of his career.
The Turquoise Circuit, which includes contestants from Arizona and New Mexico, was also well represented in today’s bull riding. Marco Juarez, from Anthony, New Mexico, had the high-marked ride of the day at 84.5 points. That came aboard a bull named White Resistol from Stace Smith Rodeo.
One of the highlights of the day was watching saddle bronc rider Logan Hay score 87 points on Bobs Alibi from Dakota Rodeo. His father, Rod Hay, won this rodeo in 2000. Adding another Hay to the history books as a champion at the “Daddy of ‘em All” would be a win for the whole family.

Just two quarter finals remain with Quarterfinals 5 beginning Wednesday at 12:45 p.m. where new contestants in every event will be vying for their spots in the Semi Finals and a share of the more than $1 million purse.
