CASPER, Wyo. (June 14, 2024) — The final round at the 2024 College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) is shaping up to be as exciting as an episode of Yellowstone and possibly just as dramatic.

Defending bareback riding champion Weston Timberman held onto his lead and is a favorite to earn another title. Timberman from Columbus, Montana, is representing Clarendon College. Working to unseat him will be Ty Pope from Missouri Valley College who earned the 2022 title here.

Timberman is a sophomore while Pope is finishing up his education and competing at his  last CNFR. Pope made his third ride in the Ford Wyoming Center on Friday night and scored 79.5 points to give him a total of 239. Cooper Filipek from Gillette College is second by half a point and Timberman leads with 242.

In Friday night’s tie-down roping Hill College’s Koby Douch stopped the clock in 9.0 seconds to move to the top spot in the overall standings. The freshman who hails from Huntsville, Texas, has a total time of 27.1 seconds on three runs. Douch’s older brother John also competed for Hill College in the tie-down roping, and was the reserve champion here in 2017.

The saddle bronc riding is shaping up to be a battle between teammates Gus Gaillard and Ira Dickinson from Tarleton State University. Dickinson, who grew up near Rock Springs, Wyoming, was in the lead until Friday. Then Galliard scored 78.5 points to move into the top spot. Galliard from Morse, Texas has 235.5 points compared to Dickinson’s 234.

Gus Gaillard of Tarleton State University edged teammate Ira Dickinson to take the overall lead in saddle bronc riding at the College National Finals Rodeo June 14. He scored 78.5 points on Dancing Girl of  Kirsten Vold Rodeo Company, boosting his overall score to 235.5. Dickinson is at 234 total points and the battle for the national championship will come down to their efforts in the final round. CNFR photo by Jackie Jensen

In 2021, Tayla Moeykens left Casper as the collegiate champion barrel racer. The next year she finished in the top 10. She came back last year and was the reserve champion behind Taycie Matthews. Moeykens, who is competing for Montana State University, had the fastest time of the week to win round three in 13.70 seconds. That gave her a total of 41.72 seconds on three. She will enter the championships in second place behind Matthews of the University of West Alabama who has 41.66. Both of these women have graduated this year and unless they decide to pursue a master’s degree, this will be their last appearance at the CNFR.

The championship finals of the CNFR will start Saturday, June 15, 2024, at 7 p.m. where national championships in all the events will be determined as well as national men’s and women’s teams, all-around and rookie of the year titles.
