CASPER, Wyo. (June 12, 2024) — At the first performance of the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR), the bulls shut out all of the bull riders. One day later, the bull riders dominated in the Ford Wyoming Center.

They rode more than 50 percent of the bulls at five of nine. For fans following this year’s CNFR, it was no surprise to see Clarendon (Texas) College’s Wacey Schalla at the top of the leaderboard.

Schalla, from Arapaho, Oklahoma, rode Western Rodeo’s bull named Cade’s Cash for 83.5 points and is the only rider at this year’s competition to ride all three of his preliminary bulls. Right behind him was Wharton (Texas) County Junior College athlete Zeke Martinez who scored 82.

As Schalla was making his way out of the arena, the first person to congratulate him was his teammate, Weston Timberman. Timberman is the defending collegiate bareback riding national champion.

Timberman helped Clarendon win the men’s team title in 2023 as well. He scored 80.5 points on Wednesday night to take the overall lead in bareback riding. He has a total of 242 points on three head and is currently on track to win his second title here.

The Columbus, Montana, resident has many Wyoming ties as well. His father and uncle grew up in nearby Mills, and he still has family there. Timberman is currently second in the third round behind Cooper Filipek who scored 83.5 points on Kirsten Vold Rodeo’s Bad Alibi.

Cooper Filipek of Gillette College took the lead in the third round of bareback riding at the 2024 College National Finals Rodeo July 12 in Casper, Wyoming. Filipek scored 83.5 points on Kirsten Vold Rodeo Company’s horse Bad Alibi and moved to second overall, just 2.5 points behind leader Weston Timberman of Clarendon (Texas) College. Wearing a shirt made especially for him by his grandmother and his signature yellow hat, Filipek is gaining fans with his style in and out of the arena. From Rapid City, South Dakota, he is second in the overall standings, just 2.5 points behind Timberman.

This is Filipek’s second CNFR qualification, but his first for Gillette College. He plans on returning to the eastern Wyoming town for another year of school this fall.

Cal Poly State University – San Luis Obispo has a lot to be proud of in breakaway roper Haleigh Grant. She set the pace in the breakaway roping in round two, stopping the clock in 1.8 seconds. That is the fastest time of the rodeo so far and she matched it again on Wednesday night.

The Santa Maria resident is a freshman who is also competing here in the team roping. She is currently fourth in the overall standings, but a broken barrier in the first round and the resulting10-second penalty may keep her from advancing to Saturday night’s championship finals.

Madalyn Richards leads that category with a total time of 6.7 seconds on three runs. Her third one also came on Wednesday night when she stopped the clock in 2.4 seconds. Grant has a total time of 16.4 and will have to wait out the next two performances to see where she lands in the standings. If she remains among the top 12, she will have the opportunity to rope one more time. She also qualified in the team roping. Even though she hasn’t had any success in that event, she has one more opportunity to earn points toward the women’s all-around on Friday when she participates in the third round.

The third performance of the CNFR will feature the continuation of the third round of competition at the Ford Wyoming Center on Thursday night at beginning 7 p.m.
